What are Turkish towels?
Turkish towels are large, flat-woven towels with fringe traditionally used in Turkish baths (hammams). They are also known as Peshtemal. What’s so special about them?
They are lightweight and compact, highly absorbent, quick drying, and sand resistant. They are versatile as you can use them as towels, blankets, picnic blankets, table cloths, sarongs. So many options! Their ability to dry faster makes them a great choice for humid climates or living aboard sailboats, power boats, RVs and tiny homes. How do I care for Turkish towels?
Soak brand new towels overnight in cold water. Then wring them and hang them to air dry. This will allow the cotton fibers to bloom and expand making them more absorbent and softer. For regular washing, machine wash with like colors in cold water and tumble dry on low/medium. From time to time, add a cup of vinegar to the wash as it will kill bacteria, remove any soap residue, and acts as a natural fabric softener for your towels. Don’t use bleach or fabric softener. Turkish towels will require several washings to become fully absorbent. This is normal!
